RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for Zen center residency must meet these requirements prior to application:

  • Complete 2 retreats at Cambridge Zen Center or another center in the Kwan Um School of Zen tradition, for a total of 4 retreat days.

  • Visit Cambridge Zen Center for regular meditation practice and have kong-an interviews with a teacher.

  • Have an interview with the Abbot.

  • Become a dues-paying member of the Kwan Um School of Zen (associate or student membership does not apply to residents)

  • Before you apply, we encourage you to spend a few days as a guest at the Zen center.

  • Review the Temple Rules read weekly at the required House Meeting.

Residents practice together a minimum of six mornings each week, share responsibilities in the kitchen, maintain the facility every Saturday morning, and engage in other activities that support the community.
